New Delhi, Oct 18 (ANI): Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has asked the domestic industry to show its humanitarian side and employ the physically challenged people.

Chidambaram was speaking to reporters after addressing a national conference on 'Engaging Industry in Employment of Persons with Disabilities' organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here last evening.

The government had earmarked Rs. 1800 crores in the budget for current fiscal and announced incentives for employers who give regular employment to differently-abled persons, including social security cover. hidambaram said even top notch industrialists were unaware of the incentives.

"A large number of people have told me, including P M Sinha who heads Bata, that he has no idea of such a scheme until a week ago. That's a failure on the part of the government. A scheme that government announced has not reached even a gentleman like P M Sinha. So, now FICCI has been roped in," he said.

He added, "I hope that FICCI will help us hold similar meetings in other places. In fact when I say 8.6 per cent, I think I was wrong if you count the pension also to that part it works out to roughly 12 per cent of the salaries being picked up under the scheme. If the employees come to know of the scheme and if they are employing disabled people they will surely claim under the scheme. The fact that not a single claim has come is a measure of our failure. So we will do our very best to make this a success in the remaining five-and-a-half months."

The union government has plans to give regular employment to 100, 000 physically challenged led people by enthusing industrialists through incentives. (ANI)

Nicosia, Oct 18 (ANI): As a result of significant investments and the construction of several new smelters, the share of the Gulf Cooperation Council states in global aluminium production is expected to increase by 150 per cent by 2010.

This estimate belongs to the organizers of Aluminium Dubai, a major trade show that will take place from 29 to March 31 in Dubai next year.

Amanda Westerman, of Reed Exhibitions Middle East, said that the GCC currently accounts for four per cent of current global aluminium production, but this share is expected to go up to 10 per cent by 2010.

"The Gulf's growing focus on economic diversification has boosted demand for aluminium and investments in the sector have increased almost two-fold since 2002 to reach eight billion dollars.

Aluminum production, which was once confined to western countries, is now shifting to the developing countries that either have the raw materials or have the energy resources to produce aluminum, namely, the GCC region with its abundant energy resources.

The GCC region has two established smelters in the UAE and Bahrain.

UAE's Dubai Aluminium (Dubal)DUBAL is currently one of the largest single-site aluminum operators in the eastern world, producing 900,000 tons of aluminium a year.

The other smelter is that of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) with a capacity of producing 860,000 tons a year.

Another eleven smelters are either under construction or in the planning stage in the Gulf. (ANI)

Tirupur (Tamil Nadu), Oct 18 (ANI): Coimbatore's apparel industry is severely hit due to the ongoing recession in US economy and is now receiving only few export orders.

The present economic crisis in the United States has affected the apparel industry with the apparel exports going down by 15 per cent in Tirupur. In knitwear exports, Tirupur has registered a fall of five per cent.

The Apparel Exports Promotion Council is taking various steps to meet the present crisis.

"Well this crisis in US is affecting us a lot. We are definitely expecting a drop of 10-15 per cent in the immediate future. Stores are coming in. I have the reports. The buyers who are coming in are not buying in as large quantities as they were buying earlier. The orders are already down by 20-25 per cent in terms of quantity," said Rakesh Vaid, Charirman, Apparel Exports Promotion Council.

Tirupur is a major source of foreign exchange earnings for the country because of its exports. 56 per cent of India's total knitwear exports comes from Tirupur.

"Tirupur exports apparels worth 14,000 crores. Total knitwear export is 16,500 crores. But this year, we expect about five per cent minus growth rate because of the recession in United States so we may do 10,500 crores, about five per cent less," said Sakthivel, president, Tirupur Exporters Association.

Tirupur is famous for the export of all knitted garment wears such as t-shirts, polo - shirts, sweat shirts, banyans, pajamas and night dresses on various fabrics like single jersey, interlock, fleece, polar fleece, pique jersey, pointelle jersey, rib, pointelle rib and drop needle.

The textile and clothing sector is the largest employer after agriculture and accounts for nearly four per cent of India's gross domestic product. By JehovahANI)

New Delhi, Oct 16 (ANI): Inflation fell to 11.44 per cent for the week ending October 4 due to decline in oil prices and manufactured goods.

In the previous week the inflation was 11.80 per cent.

The index for fuel prices declined by 1.1 per cent on account of lower prices of naphtha, aviation turbine fuel and furnace oil.

In manufactured goods category, wholesale prices, declined by 0.5 per cent on account of cheaper imported edible oil, steel, pig iron and lead ingots.
