The US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Oregon Department of Human Services have issued a safety alert yesterday warning consumers that ground beef sold in Northwest food stores might have been tainted by the lethal E.coli bug. This beef is thought to have sickened nine people in Washington and Oregon.

The number of uninsured Americans hit record levels in 2006 with 47 million people without any essential health coverage, according to a report by the US Census Bureau. The report said there was a drastic increase in the number of Americans lacking health insurance over the last 12 months.

The obesity conundrum facing the United States got worse last year with 31 states reporting rising levels of flab among the population, according to a report by Trust for America's Health. Two-thirds of American adults are obese or overweight and children are not too far behind either.

In what can be a major breakthrough, scientists have managed to implant human embryonic stem cell grafts into damaged hearts of laboratory mice and heal them. This finding, if confirmed in humans, means stem cells can repair the damaged heart muscle and also halt heart failure in its tracks.
