WEDNESDAY, February 3, (News Locale) - Consuming fish oil capsule at least once a day can reduce the chances of mental disorders among patients who are at a high risk of developing such conditions, a new research has revealed.
An international team of scientists observed 81 patients in which one group of 41 patients were given a daily dose of fish oil capsules while the remaining patients were given a placebo.
After a period of 12 weeks, the researchers found that just 5 percent of the fish oil group developed psychosis symptoms compared to 11 in the placebo group.
“The finding that treatment with a natural substance may prevent, or at least delay, the onset of psychotic disorder gives hope that there may be alternatives to antipsychotic drugs”, the researchers wrote.
The study is published in the latest issue of the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.
