FRIDAY, July 3, (News Locale) - Microsoft desperately wants to shed its image as a middle-aged uncle in the online world, which has been dominated by "fun" elements like Google and Mozilla. To this end, the Redmond behemoth has launched an ad blitz to ensure that consumers change their mind.
However a new series of ads for its flagship browser Internet Explorer 8 seemed to have gone too far. While there are elements of fun in some ads of the series, one particular ad has raised hackles among consumers. The puke and porn ad, which showed a women puking over her partner, amused some, but outraged many forcing Microsoft to pull it from the BrowsefortheBetter.com site, which is part of the ad campaign.
The ad called OMGIGP (Oh My God I’m Gonna Puke!) features Superman actor Dean Cain and shows a woman using her husband's laptop. The woman is apparently horrified to find porn stashed in the browser's history and proceeds to puke over the laptop and then over the partner. Most consumers did find the ad funny, but other did not like nice-looking woman puke over on screen.
Chris Matyszczyk of CNET.com received an e-mail from a Microsoft representative, which said that Redmond listened to its customers, "We created the OMGIGP video as a tongue-in-cheek look at the InPrivate Browsing feature of Internet Explorer 8, using the same irreverent humor that our customers told us they liked about other components of the Internet Explorer 8 marketing campaign," the rep revealed.
However the fierce criticism must have stung Redmond, which then pulled the ad. Overall Microsoft's new ads after the launch of its new search engine Bing, have played well with consumers and the results must have pleased the software giant.
With the launch of Firefox 3.5, Microsoft may have been a tad too eager to grab eyeball, which the OMGIGP ad surely did. You can watch the ad, which is available on YouTube, here .
